Should this occur, turn the skirt upside down and spray each individual layer with lacquer or a firm hold hairspray. Again, test the product in a small area before using. You do not want to melt the skirt netting. After the lacquer or hairspray is thoroughly dry, you may re-tack the skirt netting. 7. The net panty or spandex panty of the tutu skirt may be washed by placing a bowl of water and Woolite on a table and placing the skirt panty over the bowl. Gently hand wash the panty without getting water on the rest of the skirt. Rinse the panty with clean water using the same bowl method. Lay wet panty and skirt on a towel until dry. Hang tutu back onto our Tutu Storage Hanger for storage.
There are many opinions out there on how to prepare a costume for storage; and each individual has a reason for their preferences. Therefore, the following recommendations are those of this costume designer and maker and the reason for the products of this company. 1. The purpose of the Tutu Storage Hanger is not only to store a tutu more effectively, but to allow the costume fabrics to breathe. In order to do so, it is best if the costume is allowed to hang in an area that is dry, free from blowing or falling debris and has enough space to allow at least a foot between each costume. This should be done for at least a day or two after a performance. I like hanging my tutus outside on a hot, breezy day; but, a fan will do just as well. 2. I do not believe in spraying tutus with anti-bacterial sprays. These sprays are not for mold and mildew, which are caused by humidity. This type of product only kills the bacteria that feeds on the mold and mildew. While you may be ridding the costume of the possibility of fabric breakdown from bacteria, the chemicals of these sprays may also react with the fibers of the fabrics resulting in the same fabric breakdown. The anti-bacterial sprays may also react with fabric dyes. Some fabrics are dyed in different hues of a particular color for each dancer in the corp d' ballet. 3. Once tutus are thoroughly dry and airflow has completely filtered through the tutu for a few days, they should be stored in a dry room with temperatures ranging from 50°-70° and a humidity of 50%-65%. This will further discourage any fungi or bacterial growth.
4. As it can better be viewed on the
home page of this site, this tutu is heavily soiled. What was once a beautiful
performance tutu is now a rehearsal tutu due to neglectful care. A well
made
tutu may be refurbished by removing the bodice, basque and skirt overlay and
soaking them in a product such as Woolite. Gentle hand cleaning of tutus
is a must. Thus, machine washing should never be
considered. Once cleaned and air dried, steam pressing on the wrong
side of the fabric will bring the costume parts (bodice, basque, overlays) back to life for reconstruction
of the tutu.
